Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness
Kids:
All those hours of trading those cards may have paid off. In this role-playing adventure you work your way through the game trying to find out who kidnapped the professor, talking to characters, and battling Pokemon along the way. It helps if you know your Pokemon characters. Some moves don't quite effect your opponents based on their abilities. Keep an eye out for Shadow Pokemon, which you can "Snag" and keep them for yourself. Learning new moves and building your Pokemon's levels are important and help you beat the other character's Pokemon.

Be prepared to read. Since it is a role-playing game you will need to do a lot of reading. Don't worry though, it is fun. You also need to remember what the other characters told you because they play a large part in finding things you need and getting to the next levels.

Parents:
The title sounds a bit dark, but it is really not violent. When you battle your Pokemon, they "Faint" when you bring their health level down to zero. The battle moves are simulated violence but nothing worse than you would see on a cartoon. It is pretty safe for any age.

The reading part will limit who can play the game. If you have a child who doesn't read, or is below a 1st grade-level of reading, they will have a hard time playing and probably get bored. You will also get bored having to read all the interactions with the other characters.

There isn't really a multi-player mode so only one person can play at a time. However it is quite fun helping your kid get past certain battles and building their Pokemon collection.

Difficulty

Due to the reading and learning the different Pokemon. I give it a 5.
Educational
0

Other than the gameplay you don't learn anything of educational value in the game.
Fun
7

The fun takes a while to get to but after you learn how to battle your Pokemon, the fun begins.
Graphics
5

The graphics are ok but there is a bit to be desired.
Minumum Age Level
5

Your child has to be able to read relatively well to play this.
Motor Skills Level
3

Most of the gameplay doesn't require much coordination.
Problem Solving
5

Most of the problem solving requires remembering what the characters told you to do and where to go.
Reading-level
1

1st Grade level minumum. Unless you want to read all of the content to your kid. Which is a lot and ruins the fun.
Overall
6.5

This game is good but takes a while to get used to. The battles are not very action packed but still fun.
